The Northern Psychological Assessment and Treatment Service (NPATS) was established in 1999. It first commenced operating from the North Melbourne Medical Centre (Victoria Street), relocating to Melville Road, Pascoe Vale South in 2001, where it operated for the next seven years.
In 2008 the practice moved to 286 Gaffney Street Pascoe Vale, where it continues today.
In addition to private practice, our Principal Psychologist, Lewi Yiolitis, spent many years in the public mental health service gaining invaluable training and exposure to the range of mental health conditions that people experience (including severe anxiety, psychotic illness, clinical depression and bipolar affective disorder).

"A safe place to unpack your emotional issues"
The practice is located at 286 Gaffney Street.
Over the last 18 years, the practice has grown significantly so that Lewi Yiolitis has become a full-time private practitioner and welcomed a few additional clinical psychologists into the practice.
The Northern Psychological Assessment and Treatment Service has significant long-standing links with many general practitioners and psychiatrists in the region.
"Therapy is often a journey where one eventually learns to trust themselves again"

– Registered Clinical Psychologist in the State of Victoria

Lewi commenced working at a public mental health clinic in 1996 and within a few years had already developed a significant reputation as an excellent mental health practitioner. He is happy to acknowledge that his foray into private practice was both inspired and promoted by several psychiatrists he had come to work closely with during those early years, namely Dr Sunil Datta and Dr Samir Ibrahim.
Lewi has been able to service the local community through the provision of in-depth clinical psychological assessments and tailored psychological therapy for his patients. There have been therapy groups run from the practice for a number of years, which have complimented the individual treatment provided.
He has been able to assist patients referred from all areas of Melbourne, as well as country Victoria. Lewi’s engaging and warm personality and excellent assessment and therapy skill set have made him a highly sought after clinical psychologist for a number of years. Lewi has been able to assist patients with a range of mental health conditions including, but not limited to social anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic, OCD and depression.
Given his significant experience across a number of work settings including adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, primary mental health, divisions of general practice and private practice, it is not surprising that Lewi has also become a highly sought after clinical supervisor. Private supervision continues to be a significant portion of his work in the practice which has been sought by mental health clinicians from a range of disciplines, including psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and social workers.
When asked “How do you manage to stay positive after hearing so many patients talk about difficult experiences over the years?” I can honestly say that one word consistently comes to mind. Privileged. That is, I have been privileged for so many years to have had people attend my office and trust me with their life’s challenges. There is little doubt that it has been one of the most satisfying aspects of my life, to be able to help everyday people, just like myself, who fall into a hole, or are distressed or overwhelmed for whatever reason. That feeling of helping people work through their issues and seeing them return to a “normal existence”, personally overshadows any possible weight of being a clinical psychologist.

Healthy Adjustment and suitability for Therapy
Learning to endure and settle unwanted emotions is often the key to healthy life adjustment. It is human nature to avoid difficult emotions, and make life choices that in the short term seem better for us. These include being dishonest with self and others, burying our grief, avoiding intimacy or relationships all together, or abusing substances.
Therapy often leads patients to conclude that the easy path in life is not necessarily the healthiest one to take. Appropriateness for therapy is often best indicated by ones willingness to consider alternative modes of functioning and openness to learning.
The process of therapy first and foremost requires courage on the part of the patient and compassion and understanding on the part of the psychologist. Rapport building for some patients takes longer dependent on how difficult their issues have become to discuss. Patients attending NPATS are often relieved to have been able to confidentially discuss the difficulties they have been carrying for sometimes many years.
Trust, understanding and realistic goal setting are all integral aspects of therapy that are adhered to at NPATS. Rome wasn’t built in a day, however we want to assist you to navigate towards a healthier psychological space within a reasonable time-frame. Patients are equipped with strategies, mainly derived from a cognitive behavioural framework as soon as possible.
At times patients are also provided with additional therapeutic tools such as mindfulness training to enhance their recovery. Extensions of CBT such as Schema Therapy are often used to enhance therapeutic outcomes and minimise relapse.
Prior to commencing treatment an extensive clinical assessment is carried out. This involves identification of symptoms you may be struggling with (difficulty sleeping, irritability, problems containing your worries etc.) as well as a history of previous such experiences.
A relevant personal history is also taken which helps better formulate the life experiences you have had — that may have contributed to your mental health issues (e.g. bullying, parenting style).
Cognitive Balanced Therapy or CBT has been the most consistently found therapy of choice for most psychological difficulties, particularly anxiety and depressive difficulties. There is a strong educational component and literature provided to patients (handouts, books etc.) to enhance their understanding of their condition as quickly as possible.
Relaxation training is also a significant part of CBT with most patients attending therapy being equipped with ‘treatment of choice’ mood regulatory techniques. The third and probably most significant aspect of CBT is the cognitive aspect of therapy which introduces patients to the concept of faulty thinking which drives unwanted emotional responses such as anxiety, depression, anger etc. Patients are taught to talk back to their inner critic through ‘cognitive re-framing’.
For some patients, extensions of CBT are required and Schema therapy may be utilised. This deeper therapeutic modality aims to equip patients with a better understanding of the historical events that occurred which led to the development and maintenance of unhealthy patterns of thinking over the course of their lives. The re-parenting part of this therapy assists to reprocess earlier experiences from a healthy adult perspective.
Group sessions have become a significant complimentary therapeutic tool, which for many patients has assisted, in better understanding their condition and how to best assist themselves. Sessions are facilitated by clinical psychologists, primarily Lewi Yiolitis and aim to provide support and encouragement to battle one’s mental health issues.
Groups are scheduled several times per year and are often over-subscribed. For more information about groups please discuss your appropriateness for a group with your psychologist.
The process of Clinical Supervision is offered to mental health clinicians and is aimed at assisting the mental health clinician through every means possible to enhance their ongoing learning and capacity to be both educators and practitioners of the highest calibre.
This is based on Lewi’s personal mantra as an individual with a high work ethic and commitment to standards as a clinical psychologist. He believes that the practice of both teaching and providing therapy, require ongoing refinement and review. If one is closed to learning, one is essentially closed to growth and the potential for a more fulfilling life experiences, be it as a therapist, educator or patient.
The practice offers training sessions to various organisations. These include, workshops on assessment and treatment for a range of mental health conditions, including panic disorder, risk assessment, social anxiety, generalised anxiety, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and depression.
Workshops also aim to enhance clinical capacity for long term sustainability in the mental health treatment area such as 'Reflection on your practice and looking after yourself'.
